Comparison text vs mind
map
Differences between text and mind
map
In text the central subject is not as clear present as in a
mind map. In a mind map the central topic is in the middle of
the page
In text the relative importance is not immediately clear. In a
mind map the important topics are positioned very close to the
central subject. The not so important topics are in the thinner
branches which are further away from the centre of the
page.
To note everything down it requires a lot of time and energy.
In a mind map you only need to note 10% of the normal amount of
text, although you'll get a better overview and can be more
detailed.
There is a huge possibility that while you have to note down a
lot of information in normal text, that you'll be missing on
other important information while you're busy taking these
notes
Reviewing notes is (often) very boring. Reviewing a mind map
doesn't require the amount of time you need with notes.
It is virtually impossible to make clear connections and links
between various subjects. As a result you'll need to rewrite
some of the info in order to make such relationships clear. In
a mind map you simply draw an arrow from topic to topic and the
relation will instantly be clear.
The structure of a mind map invites you to add additional
information effortlessly. You can put them on the right spot
immediately.
Every piece of the information in notes looks very alike. In a
mind map (if drawn by hand) you know that every bit of info has
a chance to be unique. Your brain will love that.
While taking notes it is easy to become
distracted.
Lack of color and other visual possibilities will not activate
your brain sufficiently. As a result it will be harder for you
to remember the information.
Actually, the traditional way of taking notes will help you to
forget, although you try the opposite.
