The glue of our memory capacity
In order to remember easily we need 'glue' or call it
Velcro. How do we connect two seemingly separate images and/or
information with each other? How do you connect them in order
to remember?
Our brain is very sensitive when you start to add one or more
of the following glue-ingredients:
1. Sexuality
Both men and women have an almost perfect brain when we talk
about subjects on a sexual level. Why not use it, when you know
it works? Nobody knows what you think.
Really try to connect two seemingly unconnected words with
sexuality. And don't forget; it doesn't have to be logical. Try
to visualize the image that emerges out of this sexual mix with
the two words. Try to make it as vivid as
possible.
I know it sounds and maybe feel weird, but I assure you it
works.
2. Movement
When you start to add speed to the two different words you
have better chances to remember. For example: You want to
remember the word 'ape' and 'custard'. How do you connect these
with each other?
Well, try to imagine this: The ape is throwing a carton of
custard through the store. I hear the carton fly by and I see
it splashing against the wall.
Do you see my point?
3. Association
Whatever you try to remember, try to always connect personal
images to the overall image. Especially images that call
for a special feeling or emotion.
4. Symbolism
You can also exchange a boring image with a meaningful
symbolic image. I don't care whether the images/symbols are new
or old, as long as they reach for your attention.
5. Humor
I cannot imagine why not using this ingredient. Who doesn't
like humor?
Ok, the opposite works too, but I think the positive side of
life is more interesting. The funnier it gets, the more you'll
remember. It is as simple as that.
Salvador Dali agreed: "My paintings are pictures which made the
irrational concrete through the hands of a painter'.
Just realize this as well; many of his paintings were perfectly
preserved memories of his day- and night
dreamings.
6. Imagination
Einstein once said: 'Imagination is far more important than
knowledge!. Knowledge is restricted, while imagination includes
the whole world, enhances progression and gives birth to
evolution'.
The more you use imagination as glue, the more you will
remember.
7. Numbers
Adding numbers will make it organized. Efficiency will
improve as it is easier to address different topics this
way.
8. Sensuality
Synaesthesia/sensuality: Sensory awareness
This is the most powerful glue of all.
* Seeing
* Hearing
* Smelling
* Tasting
* Feeling
* Kinaesthesie: your bodily awareness in the sense of position
and spacial movement
9. Colors
I cannot emphasize enough. When you start to use 3 colors
per image, your memory already increases by 50%.
It is so important to use colors. The more colorful you make
things, the more you'll remember.
10. Order
By mixing order with other kinds of glue, order makes it
possible to allocate info quicker. Therefore you have a bigger
chance of being able to 'find' the information not
sequentially.
11. Positivity
In most cases positive and pleasant images are easier to
remember, as by nature our brain likes to focus on things we
like. With negative images chances for 'black-outs' are
bigger.
But for sure, it works too.
How about 11th of September 2001? What
happened then?
I am sorry, I don't want to hurt anybodies feelings here. I
just want to use it as an example. The moment you think of this
date, try to look at this list of glue and see how many of the
glue ingredients are related with your memory of 11th of
September. You'll be amazed as all ingredients are in there.
And now, all of a sudden an ordinary date becomes a very easy
date to remember. Do you see my point?
12. Exaggeration
Whatever you do, try to exaggerate at all times. Do it with
size, shape or sound. You will notice that it becomes so easy
to remember items. Pink Floyd used this principle many times.
Everyday images suddenly become very special; magical.
Your brain loves that!.
